Peel won the President’s Cup in Saturday’s spectacular Twenty20 Finals at Tromode. In the semi-finals they beat Castletown after a tough fight and then went on to defeat Ramsey for the trophy.

In the first semi, the northern club scored 136 for 6 against a Cronkbourne team weakened by Max Stokoe’s absence through injury. There were good innings from Ollie Webster (33), Eddie Cleator (26) and Jamie Moffatt (21).

In reply the Douglas side made a valiant attempt to get the runs with opener Carl Wagstaffe hitting a fine 38. However the run rate was kept down by tight bowling, notably from Moffatt whose four overs went for only eleven runs.

In the end Cronkbourne finished 34 runs short. Ashley Webster claimed three wickets and Shaun Kelly and Ollie Webster each took two.

In the other semi Castletown made a disastrous start and were reeling at 51 for 6 when Richard McGarry took control. He hammered a great 64 not out to take the Town’s score to 125 and give them a total that could be defended.

After losing an early wicket, Peel was indebted to a solid stand between Daniel Dickinson (22) and Jaco Jansen (35). At 85 for 2 all looked well, but then Jansen was run out and wickets began to fall.

At 98 for 6 the situation looked grim, but Jim Murphy (12) and Cristo Roelofse (14) came to the rescue. In the last over they steered their side to victory and a place in the final.

Ramsey won the toss, batted first and it quickly became a battle between Ollie Webster and the Peel bowlers. Roelofse and Russell Miller ripped through the top order, but skipper Webster fought back with a very aggressive innings. Giving a superb display of sixes and fours he blasted 47 out of the team’s total of 77.

Any hopes Peel had of an easy win were soon shattered. Chris McConnell roared in for a fiery opening spell in which he took three wickets. Moffatt bowled Dickenson, Greg Hawke was run out and at 45 for 5 the match was in the balance.

Then Russell Miller (21) and Alex Williamson (23) had an unbroken stand which defied the support bowling. Eventually Peel got home to win by five wickets, but it had not been easy.

Peel was hustled out for just 74 with Nigel Hinds taking four wickets and George Broad claiming three victims. Gary Thomas top scored on 23 while opener Peter Fisher netted twelve.

Robbie Prescott hit 22 and Brian Gartland 14 as the southern club moved towards victory. Then disaster struck with the arrival of Craig Williamson in the attack. He broke through the middle order and, with only two runs needed for victory, took his fourth wicket to give Peel the points.
