Flamingo Indoor Tournaments continue to grow
The KNCB’s award-winning Flamingo Indoor Tournament programme is set to go from strength to strength in 2012, with 48 teams contesting no fewer than 25 events between 15 January and 25 March.
Drawn from 16 different clubs, the teams will compete at under-10, under-12, under-14 and under-16 levels, reflecting the new age groupings adopted under the Bond’s ambitious Youth Plan.
A significant innovation next year will be the participation of a team drawn from the KNCB’s national under-13 girls’ squad in the under-12 competition.
All but two of the fifteen clubs which will be in next year’s Topklasse and Hoofdklasse divisions will be represented, the exceptions being Dosti Amsterdam and Punjab Rotterdam. Six clubs will enter sides in all four age-groups: Excelsior ’20 Schiedam, HBS Den Haag, HCC, VOC Rotterdam, Voorburg and VRA Amsterdam.
The shift in age groups means that this year’s three winners, Excelsior (under-11), VRA (under-13) and Ajax Oegstgeest (under-15) will be able to defend their titles.
The tournaments will take place in sports halls across the Randstand: the Bankras Hal in Amstelveen, Sporthallen Zuid in Amsterdam, Kennemer Sports Center in Haarlem, Olympos in Utrecht, Houtrust in Den Haag, Tanthof in Delft, and the Margriethal in Schiedam. There will be a national finals day for under-12, under-14 and under-16 teams at the Kennemer Center on 25 March.
The principal aim of the Flamingo tournaments is to maintain children’s interest in cricket over the winter, lessening the danger that they will abandon the sport in favour of rivals like football and hockey. Indoor cricket also enables young players to develop skills which can enhance their playing of the outdoor game.
