Papua New Guinea to play Bangladesh?
In an interview with Radio New Zealand International, Cricket Papua New Guinea general manager Greg Campbell revealed that as part of a plan to raise awareness of the sport in the country and give the players more experience, he is planning on organising more games against top level opponents.
And he revealed that he has already been in discussions with Bangladesh, saying that they had indicated willingness to play against PNG when they are in Australia later this year.
If the match goes ahead, it will be the first time PNG will have played an ICC Full Member since 1975, when they lost by four wickets to the West Indies in Port Moresby.
They have played Bangladesh on two previous occasions when Bangladesh were still an Associate member of the ICC. The first meeting during the 1982 ICC Trophy in England saw PNG win by 3 wickets, whilst the second, at the 1996 ACC Trophy, saw Bangladesh win by 7 wickets. A scheduled match at the 1998 ACC Trophy was washed out.
