Always a superb place to play or just watch a match, The Nedd will start the 2012 season hoping to hold their own in the league and cause an upset or two in the cups but with the emphasis still very much on enjoying their sport.

Johnny Murray takes over the captaincy at the club with Vinny O'Hara restricted through work commitments and Alex Steele, O'Hara, Kyle Morrow and Creighton Wilson will provide the backbone of the side and the foil for some of the younger players stepping up to this level for the first time. Losing Jamie Millar and Gareth Burns is an undoubted blow but there is the possibility at this stage that Keith Hamilton may join them this year and that would certainly redress the balance somewhat were it to happen.

Discussing the club's prospects for the summer, Noel McMichael suggested that their one to watch could well be 14-year old Shane Murray, but added that the rule change regarding wide balls could have a devastating effect on his youngster.

“This lad has bags of potential and is one of the most promising off-spinners I have seen in a while. He can turn a ball square and is at home on any surface but now it seems that he will be penalised for his skill. I really hope that the North West ditches any plans to “wide” every ball down the leg side because we're just joining in with this television soap opera and standing by while programmers change the rules of the sport. I have no problem with negative bowling being stamped out but this just seems too harsh on young lads trying to hone their skills”.
Little doubt that “Coke” isn't the only dissenting voice in that regard however with the amendment sanctioned by the Cricket Competitions Committee there seems no room for negotiation at present. And while the Ballykelly boys might not have the look nor indeed the inclination to be title contenders, you can be sure they'll be nobody's mugs.
