Cricket in County Donegal 1850-2012
A book on the history of Cricket in County Donegal from 1850 to the end of the coming season is scheduled for publication during the 2013 season.
Researched and written by renowned cricket author Billy Platt, the 700 plus page book with illustrations, charts in great detail the spread of cricket from Southern Ireland to the North of Ireland over a number of years up to the 1850's and then subsequently to the North West of Ireland and eventually into County Donegal.
By the early 1860's club cricket was being played virtually in every village and town in County Donegal up to the formation of the Irish Free State.
From partition to the present time cricket has diminished throughout the County apart from in the East of the County where Ballybofey, Burt, Convoy, Raphoe and St Johnston Cricket Clubs maintained its presence within various competitions under the jurisdiction of the North West of Ireland Cricket Union, as well as competing in an East Donegal Cricket League that existed for a period.
Within the pages of the book is a vast record of all the clubs that ever existed in County Donegal and the outcome (scorecards) and details of the various matches played by them, making the contents of the book of great historical value as regards the development and popularity of the game throughout the entire County of Donegal.
All proceeds from the book are being donated between the County Donegal Branch of Feileacain - Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Charity Association of Ireland - and the SANDS Charity in Northern Ireland.
To assist with the £5000 cost of printing 150 copies of the book, the author is requesting assistance by way of donations to 56 Ballycairn Road, Coleraine, BT51 3HX, all of which will be lodged pending the printing of the book with the Progressive Building Society in Coleraine.
Acknowledgements of contributions will be made in the book and complimentary copies issued accordingly.
