Midleton relishing National Cup challenge
Sunday May 13th sees a number of notable firsts for Midleton CC in the club’s fourteenth season in existence since playing their first competitive match in the MCU in the 1999 season.
The RSA National Cup game away to Sligo marks the East Cork club’s debut in an All-Ireland competition and it will be the first competitive game that the club has played featuring coloured clothing and the white ball.
Important landmarks though these may be, for club Chairman Andy Whittaker it’s the opportunity for the players to test themselves against teams from outside Munster that provides the real attraction.
“We know that on our day our full-strength first XI can hold its own against any of the other clubs in Munster but we are keen to see how we measure up to clubs from the other Unions”.
“Taking part in an All-Ireland competition adds another dimension to the club”, he continued, “and not just as an exciting opportunity for our current first team players but also as an added incentive to our younger players who can dream about playing on national stage in the years to come.
"We think that the RSA National Cup is a terrific initiative and we are delighted to be taking part in the inaugural competition”.
