Afghanistan and Nepal record wins on day two in Kuala Lumpur
After yesterday's defeat to Sri Lanka, Afghanistan got their Under-19 Asia Cup campaign back on track today with a big win over Qatar.
Batting first after captain Javed Ahmadi won the toss, Afghanistan didn't put as many past Qatar as Bangladesh did on the opening day, but still posted a good score of 308. The runs were spread around the top half of the batting order, Noor-ul-Haq top scoring with 53.
Najibullah Zadran made 49 from just 21 balls before he was the first of two wickets in two balls for Omar Ishtiaq. Omar Ishtiaq finished with 3-64, with Ali Ishtiaq also taking three wickets, ending with 3-40 from his six overs.
Qatar again struggled in reply, with Javed Ahmadi taking 5-20 (with none of the five involving a fielder) as they were bowled out for 117 to lose by 191 runs.
Nepal played hosts Malaysia at the Royal Selangor Club, and batted first after winning the toss. They scored 247-8 from their 50 overs, Sagar Pun top scoring with 71 after the innings started with a 74 run opening partnership between Subash Khakurel and Pradeep Airee.
When these two nations met in the senior ACC Trophy two years ago, the match was a close run affair that Nepal won with just two balls to spare. This match was anything but that, as Malaysia struggled to scored 140 in 43 overs before they were bowled out, losing by 107 runs, Rahul Vishwakarma taking 5-30.
In the two full member v full member matches, Sri Lanka beat Bangladesh by 43 runs, whilst those old rivals India and Pakistan put together a closely fought match, Pakistan winning by 1 run when Mohammad Nawaz held his nerve to bowl a dot ball as the last delivery of the match.
Tomorrow is a rest day in Kuala Lumpur and the tournament will resume on Tuesday. In Group A Nepal will play India and Malaysia will play Pakistan, whilst in Group B Qatar will play Sri Lanka and Afghanistan have an intriguing match against Bangladesh, which will no doubt be the best chance of an associate/affiliate win over a full member in this first round.
