Mark Simpson lifted the Club Turf Ulster Cup at Eglinton on Sunday evening after a topsy-turvy contest went the North West side's way in a 43-run verdict over Civil Service NI.

It was definitely a day for the bowlers as only Iftikhar Hussain with 32 resisted the NCU side's early pressure while Johnny Thompson and Harry Chappell both fell without scoring. Trevor Britton's dismissal left the Beechgrove side in a spot of bother at 86 for 6 before Dean Curry (34) and Christopher Dixon (27) managed to propel them towards a respectable total.

This wasn't the first time that the pair had dug in when the more senior players had failed either and their experience in the second inningds of last week's senior cup final stood them in good stead here. In the end Brigade closed on 150 all out but there was an air of confidence in the camp that that might be a decent score if they bowled well early.

Skipper Mark Simpson missed that cup final defeat by Donemana but the strike bowler was ready to make amends on the helpful surface and he and Thompson set about the Stormont side's order. Nigel Jones went for 21, Allan Coulter for 25 but the prized wicket of Griifin Nieuwoudt for 26 turned the match very much Brigade's way.

The South African had difficulty handling Mark Snodgrass and was finally undone by the former Killyclooney man who has been a revelation on the Limavady Road this summer. Simpson (4-28), Snodgrass (2-19) and Thompson (2-24) did the damage for Brigade who had 43 runs to spare at the end as they claimed the trophy for the third time in its 13-year history with Dean Curry given the man-of-the-match award by sponsor Keith Underwood.
