Castletown go joint top
Castletown are back at the top of the Standard Bank Cain League with a narrow win against Valkyres. The Town got home by just two wickets after being rocked by a devastating spell from spinner Andy Coulson.
It all started so well for Castletown. Valkyres batted first and were pinned back to 81 for 9 from their twenty overs. The bowling was accurate with Garreth Roome, Richard Jackson, Seb Aycock and Gareth Morris taking two wickets each.
The fielding was excellent and some excellent catches were taken. Valkyres were hard pressed most of the time, but Tom Reader returned from injury to hit a priceless 35. While he was at the crease there was hope, but a smart caught and bowled by Roome ended a very good innings.
Needing to score at just over four an over, Castletown raced away with openers Wicus Wessels and Gareth Morris in fine form. They had 31 on the board after only four overs when Coulson entered the attack.
Morris thrashed his first ball to the boundary, but was caught from the next delivery. Two more wickets fell to Coulson before he picked up the key scalp of Wessels, lbw for an aggressive 22.
Roome fell to Zubair Siddiqi and, at 51 for 5, Castletown clearly had problems. John Short then restored calm with a sensible piece of batting. He had reached 15 when he became Coulson’s fifth victim – neatly stumped by Ali Ansari.
Another wicket quickly fell, but Matt Ogden relieved the pressure with some calm strokes. However when he was bowled by Hameed Sulthan the Town were still two runs behind and with just two wickets left.
It all came right for them when Brendan Coleman thumped a boundary, but it was a very close call for the southerners. A much relieved Castletown now share top spot in the league with Cronkbourne, but will be glad they do not face Mr Coulson again this season.
