UKCCC SURPRISE CALPE

UKCCC, with some new faces in their line-up, surprised Calpe CC at the Europa Oval on Sunday to end any hopes the latter might have had of retaining the Senior League title they won last season.    Highlights of the match were an undefeated 113 by Henry Adair for UKCCC, an opening stand of 117 by the same player and Chris Watkins, and a third wicket partnership of 152 by Steven Gonzalez and David Young of Calpe CC.

Calpe CC post a useful total.

Calpe CC won the toss, opted to bat first and lost the wicket of Ross Harkins with the total on 22 and that of Chris Phillips on 51.     This brought Steven Gonzalez and David Young to the crease and there followed a fine display of attacking batting as they put on 152 runs for the third wicket before Young was caught behind for 84 (scored off only 65 balls in 79 minutes.)   Gonzalez went on to make 83 before he was trapped leg before in the 39th. over of the innings, Calpe CC ending on 232/6, a run-rate of 5.80 runs an over.   For UKCCC Henry Adair took 2/32 and Chris Perkins 2/48.

Adair century wins match for UKCCC

Chris Watkins and Henry Adair, aided and abetted by some dropped catches, gave UKCCC an excellent start with an opening stand of 117 in the opening eighteen overs before Gonzalez bowled the former for 52.  When two further wickets fell cheaply the balance seemed to have swung back Calpe’s way but Adair was continuing to punish any loose deliveries (and there were quite a few of those) and he duly reached three figures.   In the end, Calpe’s total was overtaken with 3.4 overs to spare.   Gonzalez took 2/39 as UKCCC went home with eighteen points to Calpe’s six.
