BAT DOMINANT OVER BALL YET AGAIN.

The domestic season to date has seen bat dominant over ball and Saturday was no exception with three centuries and four half centuries.

Barbarians CC triumph at Europa

Barbarians CC, newcomers to the senior cricket scene this season, made it two wins out of three on Saturday as they made short shrift of Mediterranean CC’s total of 241/4, thanks to an unbeaten second wicket partnership of 206 by John Hazell and Iain Latin.

Mediterranean CC lost an early wicket after which Ian Farrell and Tim Caruana put on 87 runs before the latter was bowled by Ivan Gomez for 28. Farrell soon reached his half century and in Ross Harkins he found a worthy partner as they added 76 runs for the fourth wicket. Farrell fell to Latin soon after reaching three figures but Harkins remained undefeated on 78 in a final total of 241/4.

Barbarians CC got off to an electric start, hitting 36 runs off the opening four overs, the great majority of these runs coming from the blade of Hazell. When his opening partner, Robert Perez departed, Latin joined in the run feast and Mediterranean’s total was surmounted with 8.2 overs to spare! Hazell ended on 108 and Latin on 102; it had been a total demolition job! Barbarians CC thus added 18 points to their tally whilst Mediterranean CC had to be content with five.

GCC maintain challenge.

GCC, with their third victory in as many outings, maintained their challenge to lift the Wiggins/Benrimoj Shield at the Victoria Stadium. Night Owls CC won the toss, opted to bat first and lost two early wickets before Steven Gonzalez and Paul Buttigieg put on 87 runs for the third wicket. Gonzalez had reached a personal score of 68 and looked good for three figures until Shacaluga pulled off a magnificent running catch on the mid-wicket boundary to send him back to the stands. Buttigieg remained firm, duly reaching his half century, but wickets tumbled cheaply at the other end and at 158/8 things did not look too rosy for his side. Youngsters Andrew Quinn and Mark Cruz added a further twenty runs at the end to bring the final total to a more respectable 178/9. For GCC Pavan Parwani took 2/25 and Ferrary had three stumpings and one catch behind the stumps.

Kieron Ferrary (76) and Rahul Daswani (28) put GCC well on the road to victory with an opening stand of 112 in the opening fourteen overs before Robbie Skinner disturbed the former’s stumps. When Daswani was bowled by Karan Sadhwani soon afterwards, a flurry of wickets turned what had seemed an easy victory into a tight contest and at 154/6 GCC were staring a possible defeat in the face. However, the cool and experienced head of Gary De’Ath, well supported by Parwani saw them home with four overs to spare. For Night Owls CC, Karl Sene, playing his first ever senior game, returned figures of 2/16 and Sadhwani took 2/40. GCC went home with 16 points to Night Owls five.
