Denmark will begin as one of the least-fancied sides in the tournament, having taken the last of the four places from Division 2 of the World Cricket League eighteen months ago. But they have a very experienced squad: eight of them played in the 2005 ICC Trophy, while another three who missed out on that tournament were in the side which took part in 2001.
In brothers Carsten and Michael Pedersen, Max Overgaard and veterans Mickey Lund and S¿ren Vestergaard - the latter's ICC Trophy experience extends back as far as 1994, when he first played as a 17-year-old - the Danes have a batting line-up which is capable of giving Klokker plenty of support, but which has often failed to live up to its potential on the big occasions. They will need to produce runs much more consistently if Denmark are to pull off a surprise and progress to the Super Eight phase. The squad's greatest asset apart from Klokker, perhaps, is the opening attack: left-armer Thomas Hansen is their leading wicket-taker and at 33 still a force to be reckoned with, while his partner Henrik Hansen - no relation - provides a lively complement. Morten and Lars Andersen (another pair of brothers), Vestergaard, David Borchersen and Rohit Kanaiya also form part of the seam attack, while the main variation will come from the left-arm spin of Bashir Shah, the leg-breaks of Bobby Chawla, and the off-spin of Michael Pedersen. Denmark's chances of reaching the Super Eights will be on the line from the tournament's very first day, when they meet newcomers Afghanistan: a win would open up the possibility of progressing with just one more victory, while a defeat would suggest they they were in for a very tough time indeed.
