Arrival in Cape Town

Thursday March 19, 2009

As preparation for the World Cup Qualifiers we are in Cape Town for two weeks. The objective of this period is for us to spend time outdoors training, as well as getting some decent match practice in before the serious stuff starts up in Johannesburg.

Yesterday we played Hampshire in what was, for the majority of the guys, the first game we’ve had since September. Taking that into consideration, a-23 run loss against a professional county outfit was an encouraging start. It would, however, be fair to say that we probably should have won the match. After a disciplined bowling and fielding effort restricting Hampshire to 225, followed by a rollicking Darron Reekers special at the top of the innings, we were well on top. We lost our way a little, eventually falling short. All the bowlers had a good work out and most of the batters spent some time in the middle, without anyone going on to reach the 70+ score, which proved decisive. The fielding was first class, the highlight being Tom de Grooth’s direct hit runout which was a testament to all the training the boys have done on this specific skill during the winter.

All in all a satisfying workout.

Our support staff has been bolstered by the presence of our trainer Kevin and local physio Rene. Kevin has worked tirelessly with the boys both as a group and on an individual basis throughout the winter. This is far and away the fittest team I’ve been involved in. Rene has been busy already on tour as the boys try to iron out a few niggles. They have both already proved a real asset for us. Their professionalism is inspiring and has a really positive effect on the attitude of the squad in general.

On Monday we had a day off training. First we had a team run along the sea shore followed by a swim. After lunch we visited the site of the tragic death of our mate Maupie van Nierop. It’s fair to say that it was an extremely emotional and powerful experience for the guys. Being at the spot really underlined what a terrible waste his death was. Such a lively and outgoing guy who touched so many people with his infectious attitude to life.

I don’t know why, but for some reason our trip to a township to have a coaching session with the local youngsters felt wholly appropriate after remembering Maup. We paired up and took a small group of kids each through fielding exercises and games. The kids were brilliant, keen to get involved and there was a fair bit of talent on show. It was a lot of fun.

So, we have just about been here for a week and it’s been all good. The hotel is magnificent. As usual, I’m rooming with Pieter Seelaar and we are caving it up, air con on full bore and the curtains closed. We get on well and know this vibe pretty well after a few tours together. Only problem being I get up a bit earlier than Pieter which annoys him.

Pieter Seelaar loves to sleep.
